Clara Bow

For the first time in my life
I knew there was beauty in the world.
For the first time
I saw distant lands
serene
lovely homes
romance
nobility
glamor.
You built me up
and I lived the role you wrote for me,
producing tears on your whim
and then you cut my scenes.
Sick to my stomach.
Did you read it in the tabloids?
I’ve no secrets from the world,
my heart on my sleeve,
a dangerous pair of eyes.
Mischievous, pretty,
aggressive, quick-tempered
and deeply sentimental.
All the time the flapper is laughing and dancing
there’s a feeling of tragedy underneath
she’s unhappy and disillusioned.
Running wild, sex appeal,
I’m everything you want from me,
yet almost never satisfied with myself.
I have it
what it takes
to make the magic happen
what you want
but you’d never guess how many nights
your It girl has cried herself to sleep.

This was written for Day 16 of the Kristina Mahr TTPD Challenge.

Almost all the lines used in this poem are either direct quotes from Clara herself, or things that were written about her. I have merely arranged them.
