The saying goes
that you cannot be both
the rock and the river,
but you,
you can
and you are.
You are the rock,
jutting out above the rapids,
with multiple facets
allowing for grip,
and a comfortable plateau
where one can sit
out of the water
in safety
whether to rest from fighting the currents
or to enjoy the view
or some days, both.
As the rock,
you are steadfast
sure
secure.
There is no doubt
in the mind of the one who clings
that here is a place
of safety
of support
of rest.
And yet –
You are the river.
In some places
gentle as the whisper of a spring breeze
suggesting
guiding
offering
delicately molding
effecting slow change
with a comfortable
kind
soothing
caress.
Erosion here is subtle
mild
slow
almost peaceful.
In some places,
you are the very rapids
the rock sits amidst,
almost violent
as you command the current
and set the course,
eroding a new path
across the landscape.
A perfect paradox:
stable yet change-inducing
dangerous yet safe
offering full unconditional love
for the status quo
and yet still encouraging
growth
transformation
for the better.
Both the rock
and the river.
