A Spontaneous Trip Up the Coast

Time with you

rests my heart

in a way I can’t explain.

This friendship is a sanctuary,

a safe harbour.

The masks can drop.

You quieten my thoughts,

bringing a calm to the cacophony

in my brain.

It occurs to me the lookouts

mirror your friendship.

You take me up the cliffs and

show me stunning views:

from this vantage point

the palette of blues

and aquamarine

are peace and beauty

belying the force

of the waves

crashing

upon

jagged

rocks.

Sometimes

I know the dangers

all too well

I forget to appreciate

the strength and the grace,

but not today.

Sometimes

to have this perspective

you need to climb the hill,

and what better way

to make that journey

than laughing with a friend.

And sometimes,

when the engine just won’t turn over,

the company is more important

than the way you get there,

or even where you get to,

and that’s when we make memories

we know we can laugh about

when we are old.

“Remember that day?”

I know I will.

Not because

of the car purring through the bends

or the chips that were fries

or the ocean in its splendour,

but because

time with you

rests my heart

in a way I can’t explain.
