Daisy Jones & The Six – a book review

This novel is surprisingly intoxicating. I’d heard a lot of hype but the idea didn’t really appeal to me. 70s rock bands and drug lifestyles aren’t my things, and I struggle to bother to read interviews with real life musicians I’m into. The idea of a novel written entirely as an interview just was not attractive to me. However, I was handed (and recommended) a second hand copy, so I picked it up at last.

This was captivating from the start. The conversational style makes it so easy to read. I was quickly drawn into the lives of the band members of The Six, and Daisy Jones, and at times struggled to remember they were only fictional! It feels so real I kinda want to ask my dad if he remembers when Daisy Jones and The Six broke up, but obviously he won’t! The interview style actually worked brilliantly. It kept the story fast-paced, making me feel like I was there in it at the time. It allowed multiple (sometimes conflicting) views of the same event. I often felt like I was watching a documentary rather than reading. I could see in my mind the cuts between the different interviews, interspersed with old footage.

5 stars from me. I’m grateful to have been encouraged to read it.
