Flashback by TR Davis – a book review

I feel very conflicted about this book. I was drawn to the cover so I read the blurb, and found myself expecting the next great young adult fiction. I imagined something along the lines of The Hunger Games, Divergent, Ender’s Game.

In some ways, I was right: sci fi based around a teen girl, action, lots of questions even at the end. I do have to say, the story is epic. It is, however, violently and sexually graphic such that I would not recommend it as young adult fiction.

The writing for me fell a bit flat. The chapter names were distracting from the flow of the story. And some dates near the start were confusing. Body found in June 1986, thesis about body written in April 1986? I think this may be a typo but on account of it being a sci fi book, I got distracted trying to work out what time travel or other explanation for abnormal chronology might be going on. I also felt like there were times the teenage girl conversations were just not realistic.

I’m not sure if I’ll read the sequel. I do have questions still and the book drew me in enough to be curious about the follow up. What is really like is for someone to make this into a movie or a mini series so I don’t have to read the next one.

I believe this is a debut novel for TR Davis, and I do think he has potential. As I said, the actual plot idea is amazing.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this and offer my honest opinion.
